Joseph Coselli, born in Houston, Texas, on October 28, 1952, to Doris L. and John A. Coselli, an attorney, he pursued his early education at George W. Strake Jesuit High School. He then attended the University of Notre Dame from 1970 to 1974, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology.
He completed his medical training at the University of Texas Medical School, receiving his MD in 1977. He gained invaluable experience under the mentorship of E. Stanley Crawford. Following this, he undertook a General Surgery Residency in 1977 and a Thoracic Surgery Residency in 1982, both at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliate Hospitals.
Remaining at Baylor College of Medicine, he advanced to the position of professor and chief of the division of cardiothoracic surgery. His leadership and contributions to the field were recognized when he served as president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery in 2016.
